Over 40,000 Ethiopians to get legal status in Saudi Arabia
Ethiopian Foreign Minister, Dr Tedros Adhanom who is on an official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday held discussion with His Royal Highness Saud Al-Faisal, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom.
During the discussion, Dr. Tedros emphasized the strong historical relationship the two countries have shared since the first arrival of the followers of Prophet Mohammed, and briefed the Minister on Ethiopia’s economic development, noting the huge potential opportunities for investment in the country for Saudi investors.
He underlined the need for cooperation in areas of investment and in particular in infrastructural and development aid.
He also took the opportunity to express his appreciation for the generosity of the Saudi government in agreeing to legalize the status of Ethiopian immigrants in Saudi Arabia, and requested the Saudi authorities to postpone the deadline for registration as many Ethiopians hadn’t yet managed to take the opportunity to register.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has started to legalize immigrants and more than forty thousand Ethiopians are expected to be given the privilege to legalize their status in Saudi Arabia.
Prince Saud Al-Faisal expressed his sympathy for the situation of the immigrants and said the government had agreed to postpone the deadline for registration by four months.
His Royal Highness also expressed his appreciation of the economic development of Ethiopia in the current uncertain state of the world economy and agreed on the need to strengthen cooperation in the areas of developmental aid and investment.
The two parties also discussed regional issues, and His Royal Highness, who welcomed the role Ethiopia played in the region, said the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia considered itself as part of Horn of Africa due to its proximity and the socio-cultural ties it had.
Dr. Tedros took the opportunity to invite His Royal Highness to visit Ethiopia in the near future.
